Alexandrine Parakeet-known as parrot (Tiya/Tota Pakhi) in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh we see mainly green parrot which is known as Tiya/Tia or Tota/Tuta Pakhi. This bird is also known as Alexandrine Parakeet or Alexandrine Parrot which is a resident breeder from Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka to south east Asia.

The parrots (Tia/Tuta Pakhi) are a broad order of more than 350 species in 86 genera that make up the order Psittaciformes, found in most tropical and sub tropical regions. The order is subdivided into three families : the Psittacidae (true parrots), the cockatoos and the Strigopidae (New Zealand parrots). Though there is a great diversity among these birds, there are similarities as well. All parrots (Tiya/Tota Pakhi) have curved beaks and all are zygodactyls, meaning they have four toes on each foot, two pointing forward and two projecting backward. Most parrots (Tia/Tuta Pakhi) eat fruits, flowers, buds, nuts, seeds and insects.
The Alexandrine Parakeet’s or green parrot (Tiya/Tota Pakhi) habitat in forest, open woodland and cultivation. It is scarce in much of its range. It nests in holes in large trees, laying 2-4 white eggs. The Alexandrine Parakeet (Tiya/Tota Pakhi) is a gregarious and noisy species, forming huge flocks at evening roosts. Its flight is swift and direct, and the call is a loud scream, similar to but deeper than thet of the Rose-ringed Parakeet.
Alexandrine Parakeets (Tiya/Tuta pakhi) are mainly green, measuring between 56 to 62 cm with a tail up to 35 cm in length. The mail’s head is green with grey-blue cheeks and nape. There is a broad black neck ring and broad pink nape band. There is a brownish-red shoulder patch and the tail is yellow-tipped bluish-green. The bill is yellow-tipped red. Females and young birds lack the black neck ring and pink nape band and are duller. Incubation period of parrots are 21 days and fledge with in 35-37 days. Parrots (Tiya/Tuta Pakhi) live extraordinarily long lives, often longer than 50 years.
Alexandrine Parakeets (Tia/Tuta Pakhi) are popular pets, known for their tameness, ability to talk and vivid colouring. However, they require a rather tall cage to accommodate their long tails and need wooden toys to keep themselves stimulated and to keep their beaks in shape. They are amongst the highest-fetching species of parakeets in the pet trade.
In Bangladesh we see six species of parrots (Tiya/Tota Pakhi), of which Alexandrine Parakeet is critically endangered. Following are the parrots of Bangladesh : Latkan/Lejkata Tiya (Vernal Hanging Parrot, Loriculus vernalis); Tuta/Tota (Red-breasted Parakeet, Psittacula alexandri); Chandona/Baro Tiya (Alexandrine Parakeet, Psittacula eupatria); Kalomatha Tiya (Grey-headed Parakeet, Psittacula finschii); Tiya/Tia (Roseringed Parakeet, Psittacula krameri); and Lalmatha Tiya/Hiramon (Blossom-headed Parakeet, Psittacula roseate).
